Shawn Marks grew up in Westborough, the youngest of four brothers. He wasn't the biggest guy on the ice. He didn't play organized hockey until he was in high school. It was during his younger years playing pond hockey that his friends started calling him Shawnzo, and eventually just ZO, a name that stayed with him for life. ZO wasn't the best player when he joined the Rangers Hockey team but was said to have had the best attitude about being there for the team. ZO is remembered by many not by his physical size or ability to play hockey, but for his passion for the game and his team. He worked constantly to improve his own skills. During his senior year he had a considerable amount of ice time due to his efforts. He played defense across from his good friend Kevin Leverone and received the "Most Improved Player Award" as a senior in 1988. After graduation ZO organized several of his friends to get a team together annually to play hockey in the Chowder Cup in Marlborough. He also continued to play in intramural leagues as an adult.

Patch Article -Rembering Zo on the Tenth Anniversary
ZO died February 15th, 2002 as a result of an automobile accident on
Valentines Day while visiting friends in Westborough. He is
remembered for his passion for hockey. In lieu of flowers at his funeral
his family requested donations may be made to Junior Varsity and Varsity
Hockey Program. Westborough Varsity, JV and
Middle School teams all wear the ZO patch on their jerseys to keep the
spirit of ZO in the game. WAHA has created the "ZO Marks" scholarship,
awarded annually to a graduating Westborough Rangers Hockey Player. His friends
and team mates have organized "Team ZO" and continue to
play in the Chowder Cup Tournament. His passion for hockey and
life continues to inspire us. Forever Rangers.
